Garety and Delcamp, Tanida and Sharp Use Playoff Birdies to Win GAM Women’s Four-Ball Titles

Women’s Four-Ball Championship 2017

BATTLE CREEK – Michigan State University golfers Yurika Tanida and Katie Sharp topped another pair of Spartans in a playoff to win the Open Division, and Terry Delcamp and Joan Garety won the larger Senior Division in a playoff at the 7th GAM Women’s Four-Ball Championship presented by the West Michigan Golf Show Tuesday. Delcamp, of Grand Blanc, and Garety, of Ada, will get their names inscribed on the championship’s trophy for the third time. Fittingly the trophy is named in honor of Garety and Mary Jane Heistand, a pair of Michigan Golf Hall of Fame members. “It is always cool to have your name inscribed on a trophy, especially one named after you,” Garety said. “I’m tickled.” Tanida, a native of Japan who will be a freshman this fall on the MSU golf team, and Sharp, a senior from Kendallville, Ind., topped senior Spartans Jacqueline Setas of East Lansing and Greer Clausen of Battle Creek on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff after each team had matched rounds of 67 for two-day 135 totals. Tanida hit a wedge to five feet on No. 10, the first playoff hole, and made the birdie putt for the win to put their names on the trophy. She also chipped in for birdie on the last hole of regulation play. They needed it because Setas made a sliding 20-foot birdie putt for her team. “Jacque and Greer are really great teammates and it was a lot of fun to play with them,” Sharp said. “Everybody was playing well, too. We birdied different holes at the start, but at the end we birdied the same holes so it was exciting.” Tanida and Sharp said it was their first time playing in the four-ball format. “I liked it,” Tanida said. “It’s fun to have a teammate.” There were Spartans everywhere it seemed. Third place went to the Harding sisters, Priscilla and Caroline, of South Lyon and MSU, who shot 140 with a closing 69. Two teams tied at 142. Brook Busse of Rochester and Wayne State University and Meghan Deardorff of Clarkston and Central Michigan University teamed up for a 68 and 142. Grand Valley State University golfers Mackenzie Blomberg of Auburn Hills and Alex Amos of Komoka, Ontario, shot 72 for 142. The Lakers added some colorful international flavor to the day. Blomberg was dressed in red, white and blue stars and stripes, and Amos in red and white maple leafs. Delcamp and Garety, competitors and friends for 35 years, shot a final round 72 for 143 and were tied at the end of regulation play in the senior division with Audrey Akins of LaSalle, Ontario, and Peggy Bondy of Amherstburg, Ontario, who closed with a 73. On the first playoff hole Delcamp pitched her second shot from just off the green to one foot for the birdie and win. “It was close enough for me to make it,” Delcamp quipped. “We just didn’t have many birdies either day. We were discussing how we are very similar players. It’s not like one of us is a bomber and the other a steady Eddie. We both play steady, and make a lot of pars. Pars work if you can make a birdie in a playoff I guess.” Susan Campbell of Kalamazoo and Shelly Weiss of Southfield shot two rounds of 72 for 144 and third place. Jayme Heimonen of Portage and Kim Samelstad of Kalamazoo were next at 150. Winners were also crowned in two other flights, and in net and gross scoring. Results can be found on this site under the Championships tab. -Greg Johnson
